I came here in August ’94 after the petrochemical company where I’d worked as a Chemical Engineer for six years closed down its South Wales operation. From what I had gathered talking to fellow I.Chem.E. (Institution of Chemical Engineers) members who were already working here, this was a solid company with excellent prospects. Just as importantly, the skills I had were transferable, something I discovered during a visit to the Barry site. But I suppose what attracted me most to Dow Corning was the opportunity to gain operational experience - that and the option to progress within either a technical or leadership role further on down the line.
After 18 months as a Manufacturing Engineer, I became a Team Leader - a role I really enjoyed, and which gave me the experience and confidence to apply for the job I’m in now. Leading the Process Safety Expert Team, I’m responsible for all aspects of process safety management, including the effective containment of large volumes of chemicals. Because we store and use various hazardous substances, I liaise with the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) on a regular basis in order to demonstrate how we’re keeping new and existing processes safe. Other key aspects of my role include conducting periodic hazard reviews, identifying best practice and working alongside our Process Safety Team on short and long-term process safety improvement projects. Where safety’s concerned, it’s essential that we always stay one step ahead. And I make sure we do!
I really enjoy my role, and for many reasons. The variety. The technical challenges. The opportunity to influence site leadership. And the chance to work with people from different disciplines, and in different countries too - I travel to the States at least once a year on business. Of course, Dow Corning has made it all possible. They’ve encouraged and supported me throughout every stage of my career here, and made sure that I had the right tools for the job. For example, when I moved into Process Safety, which is a highly specialised branch of Chemical Engineering, they covered the cost of my two-year MSc in Process Safety and Loss Prevention. I’ve also obtained a coveted Black Belt in Six Sigma as well as a NEBOSH qualification.
I wouldn’t hesitate for one second in recommending a career at Dow Corning, or Dow Corning as an employer for that matter. The people are great, the training is phenomenal, and as well as being given every opportunity to progress as I have, you’ll also have the chance to explore a myriad of career paths.
